    Color of Gear - Why?

What color gear do you wear and why?

I wear a Red roadcrafter with a Red Schuberth Helmet.  I usually have a Red backpack on while commuting.  I went with this color scheme without too much thought outside of "red sticks out in a crowd".

Are there studies that show different colored gear is more conspicuous than others?

There was a study done in New Zealand that stated that someone wearing a white or light colored helmet was 16% less likely to be involved in a collision because they were mor conspicous.       painted my helmet the next day.

I have a HiViz Roadcrafter because it's an un-natural color, so people notice it.  Folks tell me I look like a fireman riding in this suit.  I have a black helmet, because it was the only color available when I bought it, but when I get a new helmet it's going to be yellow, (or possibly white, and custom-painted to be HiViz green like the 'stich.)

The Aerostich website has some good information about why their HiViz suits are so conspicuous at this link: http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/HiViz-Motorcycle-Suits-sp-19.html.  At the bottom of this page is a link to a study in New Zealand.

Also, the Hurt Report mentions that most motorcycle accidents are due to the other motorist not seeing the cyclist.  There's a summary of the Hurt Report at this link: http://www.clarity.net/~adam/hurt-report.html

    Hope this helps.

Re: Color of Gear - Why?

When I was a kid, there was a study about painting firetrucks day-glo yellow because red can appear brown at twilight, and that the yellow sticks out like a sore thumb.

    Hunters, of course, wear orange.

I imagine that any extremely bright color would help, and if it doesn't appear in nature, that probably enhances it.

I have to tell you, while following a guy on the racetrack back around Labor Day, I noticed something weird about his bike - it seemed to have an orange puddle that followed it everywhere. Turns out it was his lower fairings reflecting orange light onto the track. Yes, they were bright. And you certainly couldn't miss the bike.

They say that Loud Pipes Save Lives! I say Loud Horns, and Loud Colors save more. I don't wear loud clothes, but as you can see in my picture, I do have loud colors on my bike. After years of riding black bikes because the grease didn't show as bad, I got a shaft drive. The first thing I did is paint it Banana Yellow, and installed a set of Caddy horns. From the first ride I noticed the difference. Very few poeple violate my right of way, and the ones that do get a shot of Cadillac noise. That gets their attention! Yes, they are looking for a Caddy, but they all have the same reaction. They stop, and look twice before proceeding. So, yes, color does make a difference, whether it's gear, or the bike. But one thing needs to be understood. If you can't see much color from the front, it won't make much difference. That's where the threat is.

    Hello all,

I am new to the forum and figured this was as good a place as any to jump in.

Being active duty (Navy) we are required to wear orange reflective vests (think highway workers) but when ICON came out with their "Mil-Spec" vest I grabbed it up. It has a spot for your ID card as well as two external pockets and one inside.

I have been very pleased with the durability / breathability of it and for $40.00 you can't beat the price of being as visible as possible.

Re: Color of Gear - Why?

The "visual conspicuity" issue is a ruse.

During the early seventies the government required motorcycles to have headlights on 24/7.  Since that time other vehicles have either had daytime running lights or been encouraged to run headlights during inclement weather and or funerals as well as other times.  This has totally obscured motorcycles.  I believe that in short order, these specific conspicuity colors will blend into the background as other uses for the colors will be encouraged or required under law.

Don't fall for the BS of a benevolent government.
