Factory Motorcycle Horns should be outlawed.

Of all the stupid places to hold the price line. Every Motorcycle should have horns as loud as an old Caddy. It's the first thing I change on my bikes. The factory horns in todays traffic mix are useless. Nearly everyone has the windows up, air on, stereo humping, and a cell to the ear. How are they supposed to hear that wimpy factory horn? Even if they do, what will they think it is? Something far away? When it comes to safety equipment on todays motorcycles, I can think of no greater investment that a loud horn. So what's up with the factorys? Save a nickle. Hold that priceline. As long as it passes 50 year old standards it's OK. To the factories a horn is an afterthought to get past the law, and that's all.

I agree Duck. There are some good air horns out there for all bikes. Strebal makes a good small package air horn.

I have no problem blasting my horn when I am going through an intersection if it appears that someone is going to turn into me. I will even blast my horn if I see a cager talking on their phone next to me when I see that they are drifting towards me.

I believe in using every possible method to make sure you are noticed!

    Good post man.

Your right. Bikes should have horns that would make someone think they were about to hit an 18 wheeler.

The sad part of this equation is it's not that expensive to upgrade. My Caddy horns came from a Hearse that had burnt to the ground. They were about the only usable part left on the car. Two used horns, and a starter relay for a lawn tractor from NAPA (cost $10), and about 30 minutes work it's done.

Factory horns are "legal", so most people think they are adequate. "Legal" is a minimum standard thought up when everyone drove with their windows down. They may be legal, but all new motorcycles should have a newer standard applied. The way it is now, the larger the vehicle the louder the horn. In West Virginia a bicycle horn that uses a squeeze type air bulb is legal on a motorcycle. But that don't mean it's adequate.
